Global
2020 marks the start of a significant decade for the sustainability community as the United Nations' "Decade of Action" calls for progressive efforts to address urgent global challenges - ranging from environmental to social issues. To build a more sustainable future, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are to be achieved by 2030. A number of these key priorities focus on water, carbon emissions, and the circular economy.
To continue being a company that contributes to the realization of a sustainable society, we have also committed ourselves to an ambitious plan. As part of our Suntory Group Plastic Policy, Suntory will aim for fully sustainable plastic bottles in all the PET bottles used globally by 2030.
We believe that sustainability management must include reducing our environmental impact through recycling and decarbonization. To do so, we developed the world's first F-to-P direct recycling technology, allowing us to simultaneously reduce carbon emission and increase recycling efficiency. We have also introduced a PET bottle cap made with 100 percent plant-based raw materials.
Our Plastic Policy affirms our commitment to continuing these efforts:
In alignment with the 2020 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Suntory has pledged to transition to a circular economy approach to plastic use. "While it does take time and effort, I believe that we can find ways to establish an efficient collection and recycling system in other regions if industry, government, and civil society work together," said Takeshi Niinami, President and Chief Executive Officer of Suntory Holdings Limited.
Addressing this urgent, global plastics issue cannot be done alone. Our Plastic Policy ensures that Suntory will continue to collaborate with stakeholders, governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as other organizations across industries. This led to our recent partnership with the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP), a global alliance that works to effectively and sustainably reduce plastic waste and pollution around the world. Our Plastic Policy and partnership with key organizations such as the GPAP empowers Suntory to exercise dynamic leadership in the transformation to a circular, post-carbon world. We're proud to take part in these coordinated efforts to ultimately drive collective action and help realize a more sustainable society for all.
